McKean, D. (2009). The Graveyard Book. NY: HarperCollins Children's Books. After his parents and sister were murdered, Bod Owens went to live in a graveyard not far from his home. He was raised by ghosts and learned the ways of the graveyard. As he grew, he wanted to learn more about the creatures in the graveyard, but also wanted to learn the ways of the living. He tried associating with the living, but found it hard to stay silent. His guardian, Silas, would always try to protect him and knew that Bod would have to one day face his parents murder. Bod was able to defeat Jack and because of this, Silas knew that the time had come to release Bod into the world of the living. I enjoyed reading this novel. This novel is perfect for readers who enjoy action with horror.

Crenshaw

Applegate, K. (2015). Crenshaw. NY: Feiwel and Friends. Jackson is a boy that has many life struggles. At his young age, he struggles with poverty and wonders why he has to go through that. As a result, he conjures up an imaginary cat named Crenshaw. Crenshaw appears in his life only when problems arise. Crenshaw seems to distract Jackson from thinking about his problems. However, at the end Jackson gets tired of their life situation and lets his parents know. I really enjoyed this book. It made me think of the problems that small children have to endure.
