Draper, S. (2010). Out of My Mind. NY: Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

Ever since Melody Books was born, she was aware of her handicap. However, she also knew that she was smart. She just needed a way to prove to everyone else what her mind was capable of doing. She got a chance to do just that when she learned about a special device that would allow her to communicate. When she finally was able to show the kids and teacher at school what she know, she was unstoppable. She even made it to the quiz team at school and was known as one of the smartest kids. She was elated when her team made it to nationals and were going to Washington D.C. Melody was super excited and could not wait to go. However, fate had other plans, the day of the trip she found out that her team had left without her. She was devastated that her team and friends had left her behind, but she was not deterred and kept excelling at school.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It taught me never to underestimate any student in school. Every child learns and they learn that there own pace.

However, at the end Jackson gets tired of their life situation and lets his parents know. I really enjoyed this book. It made me think of the problems that small children have to endure.

Her grandmother is about to sell the cabin and she is helping her pack all her valuable things. One night she is visited by a ghost blue ghost. The ghost is calling her Elizabeth and Liz does not understand why the ghost is there. She is then transported into another time and meets her ancestors. While there she finds out that the baby is suffering from croup and the other Elizabeth does not know how to help her brother. Liz was guided by the blue ghost to find the remedy book and help the baby.

She writes about her youth and the events are occurring at that moment. She grew up knowing the discrimination of African American people. She grew up knowing about the important historical figures that made a change for her community. She writes about her feeling and the people in her family. She remembers the smells and the sights of Greenville. She remembers the changes that her family had to do because of her mother. From the beginning she knew that she would become a writer.
