Frogs

Bishop, N. (2008). Frogs. NY: Scholastic Press Nic Bishop explores the wonderful life of frogs. He teaches that frogs are everywhere except Antarctica. Frogs are found near water most of the time. They need to stay moist. Even frogs that live in the desert like the Spadefoot Toad, it needs to stay moist and it does that by burrowing itself underground. Frogs are amazing animals because they start their life in water and are able to live outside of the water too. Some frogs have different types of protections against predators by either becoming large or having poison. Frogs also care for their young. Like the Strawberry dart poison frog.

NY: Scholastic Press In a town where everything is loud and noisy, the people are tired of the noise and sounds and wanted the town to be nice and quiet. They run the mayor out of out and elected Don Pepe. Don Pepe makes singing against the law. As a result, the town is quiet and peaceful. Everyone is afraid to make a noise. Rooster likes to sing and is happy doing it. He sings regardless of the hardships that are imposed on him. The rooster teaches the town that singing heals the soul and everyone agrees. They run out the mayor and the town goes back to being a place of joy and happiness.

Watch Me Throw the Ball!

Willems, M. (2009). Watch Me Throw the Ball! NY: Hyperion Books for Children. Elephant is happy throwing his ball, but when Piggie find the ball he tells Elphant that he can throw it better than him. Elephant tries to convince Piggie that it is hard to throw a ball. Piggie throws the ball and thinks that he has thrown it to far away that you can't see it. He is convinced that he is the best at throwing the ball, but Elephant tells him that in fact the ball was not thrown far away, because it ended up behind him. Then Piggie tells him that he has thrown it so fast that it went around the world and landed behind them. Elephant then tells him that that is not true, but Piggie does not care because he had fun throwing it. Elephant then decides that throwing a ball should not be hard work, but it should be fun to do.

Baby Mouse Heartbreaker

Holm, Jennifer and Matthew. (2006). BabyMouse Heartbreaker. NY: Random House Children's Books BabyMouse finds out that Valentine's Day is coming up and the Valentine's Dance will happen at school. She is worried because she does not have a date for the dance. She brainstorms who might ask her to go to the dance, but nobody ever does. She tries to beautify herself to find a date, but it does not work. She finally decides to go to the dance by herself. When she is there she feels very uncomfortable because she is the only one without a date, but then her friend Georgie surprises her by asking her to be his date. She ends up having a great Valentine's Day.

The Blue Ghost

Bauer, M. (2005). The Blue Ghost. NY: A Stepping Stone Book Young Liz goes to visit her grandmother in her old cabin in the woods. Her grandmother is about to sell the cabin and she is helping her pack all her valuable things. One night she is visited by a ghost blue ghost. The ghost is calling her Elizabeth and Liz does not understand why the ghost is there. She is then transported into another time and meets her ancestors. While there she finds out that the baby is suffering from croup and the other Elizabeth does not know how to help her brother. Liz was guided by the blue ghost to find the remedy book and help the baby.

Love That Dog

Creech, S. (2001). Love That Dog. NY: Joanna Coltler Books Jack doesn't like to write poems and doesn't understand some of the poems that they are reading in the classroom. He writes poems but does not want the teacher to put his name on it. He wants to remain anonymous. Jack writes a poem about his dog Sky. He expresses his feeling about his dog and what he felt when he died. Jack gets his inspiration from the poet Mr. Walter Dean Myers. He likes it when Mr. Walter Dean Myers takes the time to visit his school.
